The Norwegian Defence has had a Special Forces capability since the 1960s, but it was not until 1999 that the armed forces decided to lift the veil and make information on these forces more available to the public. Since then, Norwegian Special Forces have taken part in operations in the Balkans as well as in Afghanistan.

Special Forces soldiers all have to go through a rigorous selection process, where both their physical and mental capabilities are scrutinized. The selected soldiers are therefore highly suited for their strenuous tasks

The Army and Navy Special Commands are both built up by well-trained troops, with much better equipment and capabilities than regular army forces. The primary tasks of these two commands are special reconnoitering, small-scale offensive operations and military advisory operations.
